Dr. Tira Harney Clay, Ph.D.

Dr. Tira Harney Clay, Ph.D., is a force for change in Christian psychology, counseling, and applied psychophysiology with emphasis in neuroscience. She is a professional counselor and a clinical postdoctoral psychology fellow for a multidisciplinary clinic in Atlanta. Her impact is also felt through her role as the founder and President of Human Interaction Experience, LLC., a private consulting and training company specializing in curriculum and instructional design for health equity, mental health, integrative health, and leadership training. Dr. Tira’s work is further amplified as the President/Founder of Emmaus Institute of Brain Health, Wellness, and Research, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit dedicated to whole-person health initiatives to manage stress, mood-related diseases, brain health, and other chronic and mental health conditions. Emmaus Institute provides evidence-based research and comprehensive services to individuals and organizations as they seek to create and sustain mental health, wellness, and quality of life.

Dr. Tira Harney Clay, Ph.D., is a highly accomplished professional in behavioral medicine (mind, body, spirit). She is a professional counselor and a clinical postdoctoral psychology fellow at a prestigious multidisciplinary clinic in Atlanta. Dr. Tira is also the esteemed founder and President of Human Interaction Experience, LLC., a renowned private consulting and training company. Her expertise in curriculum and instructional design for health equity, mental health, integrative health, and leadership training is widely recognized. Additionally, Dr. Tira is the President/Founder of Emmaus Institute of Brain Health, Wellness, and Research, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit that promises hope for whole-person health initiatives.

Dr. Tira’s academic journey is a testament to her dedication and expertise. She holds a Doctoral degree in Applied/Clinical Psychophysiology and a Master’s in Applied Psychology. Her Bachelor’s in Psychology was earned as an NIH Scholar from Spelman College.

Dr. Tira is a licensed Minister of the Gospel and holds post-graduate certifications in Christian counseling, mental health, and integrative health coaching. She is completing her licensure and a second doctorate in Clinical Christian Psychology & Counseling. Her passion for collaboration and transformational counseling and coaching is evident in her work with women of all ages, focusing on the spiritual, emotional, psychological, and physiological responses that promote health and healing. Her research, which expands her dissertation, is focused on brain activity and correlates with premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Dr. Tira’s love for research and writing has led to her authorship of textbook chapters in Blacks in Osteopathic Medicine: An Idea Whose Time Has Come by Dr. Darnita Anderson Hill, DO, and writings in The Trichology Healthcare Textbook: The Scientific Approach to Healthy Hair by Connie Judge. 

Dr. Tira’s commitment to her community is a defining aspect of her work. She serves as the Chair of her church’s prayer ministry and co-chairs a women’s Praise and Dance Ministry. Her dedication extends to her roles as an Executive Board Member for two non-profit boards. The first is the Transformational Leadership Collaborative (TLC), a nonprofit founded to address racial disparities in policing and transform policing among Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) people through neuroscience and equity-based knowledge, skills, and education. The second is Women of Exchange Empowerment (WoEE), a non-profit designed to empower and transform women’s lives through prayer, training, and education. 

Dr. Tira’s personal life is a testament to her strength and resilience. She is a widow blessed by God to have given birth to three handsome sons. She also adores her beautiful bonus children and four grandchildren, who endearingly call her “Sweet Tea.” This personal connection reflects Dr. Tira’s warmth and compassion, which she brings to her life and work.
